We are pleased to announce a unique opportunity to attend a course designed to train Pain Resource Nurse (PRN) Program coordinators. PRN Programs prepare staff nurses to act as role models and resources for the day-to-day care of patients in pain.  We invite you or a nursing leader from your organization apply to attend the training course on November 13-14, 2009 in Chicago.

This course is being offered by The Resource Center of the Alliance of State Pain Initiatives and the University of Wisconsin. The program content and materials have been developed by a team of nationally recognized experts in pain. The course will review how to present and organize essential content on pain management: definitions and physiology; assessment; pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions; management of acute, chronic and cancer pain; and pain and substance abuse. There will also be practical discussions of how to implement a PRN Program within your organization. Each participant will receive a copy of the PRN Program Curriculum materials including nine educational modules in power point with extensive speaker’s notes, resource lists, and supplemental educational materials and handouts. A CD and flash drive are included that provide all educational materials and planning tools in an electronic format.

ANCC and Iowa Nursing Contact Hours may be earned for successful completion of this course.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Continuing Education in Nursing is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

We are able to offer the PRN Training Course a cost of only $175 (Note: if you have already purchased the PRN Training Guide, your cost will be $75).  Participants will be responsible for their own travel and lodging expenses. Enrollment will be limited to the first 50 qualified applicants.

Application requirements preview

Applicants must commit to coordinating a PRN Program in your institution within the year following the trainig course. Applicants will be asked to submit:

  1. the completed Application Information and Demographics form (this form is part of the Application Packet),
  2. a letter of organizational support (this is a template for a letter of support).
